Introduction

In 1929, Herbert Lawrence Block began publishing editorial cartoons in the Chicago Daily News under the pen name Herblock. Over the next seventy years, he established a reputation as one of America's preeminent cartoonists. His images were syndicated in more than 300 newspapers, and he won three Pulitzer Prizes. The following cartoon was published a little more than a week after the Flint sit-down strike began, and it was undoubtedly inspired by the incident.

Question to Consider

  • What is Herblock's message about the automobile industry?
